Greetings!
We are excited to launch this webpage in order to provide our students, parents, staff, and community members with important information regarding FUSD's ELL Department. This department exists first and foremost to assist in meeting the unique needs of students enrolled in our district who speak English as a second language. Our programs provide ELL students with incredible learning opportunities designed to develop their skills in reading, writing, and speaking the English language, as well as master the academic content appropriate for their grade level.
In addition to serving our ELL students, our department also strives to assist ELL parents by helping them overcome cultural or language barriers that may otherwise prevent them from taking an active role in their child's education. Sometimes parents assume that if they do not speak the same language spoken in their child's school, then they are not able to be involved or help their child. This assumption can't be more wrong. Parental involvement is such a key factor in a student's academic success, no matter what language is spoken in the home. Our department will work with all ELL parents to provide them with a translator or interpreter free of charge for any needs that they may have related to their child's education.
It is a great privilege to oversee this department and work to continually improve our services for our ELL children and parents. We have an incredible staff working in our office, as well as amazing teachers and paraprofessionals working hard in the classrooms each day. I hope that this webpage is a helpful resource for you in learning more about who we are, and what we do. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Respectfully,
Bethany Hutchison, Director of ELL
